Court diagram: 4v3+1 Fast Break basketball drill

Instructions

  1. Start four offensive players on the baseline and four defenders facing them at the free-throw line. Use one ball
  2. One defender passes to any offensive player
  3. The defender matched to the receiver touches the baseline, then sprints back to recover and make it 4v4 as early as possible
  4. Offense attacks immediately in a 4v3+1 advantage
  5. Play live until a score, stop, rebound, or turnover
  6. After the possession, both teams come back the other way 4v4
  7. Rotate groups

Coaching Points

  • Offense sprints wide lanes to create spacing
  • Attack before the recovering defender gets matched
  • Pass ahead when a teammate has an advantage
  • Make the defense commit
  • First defender stops the ball. Other defenders protect the rim and match shooters
  • Recovering defender sprints back, communicates, and finds the most dangerous threat

Variations

  • Add a shot clock to the 4v3+1 possession
